CARDO MARIANO

Silybum Marianum L.

DESCRIPCIÓN BOTÁNICA  – Planta robusta. Mide entre 60 y 150 cm de altura. Tiene una raíz gruesa y ramificada, que da lugar a una roseta de hojas ovaladas, rodeadas de dientes irregulares. Durante el segundo año se desarrolla un tallo recto, que en la parte superior tiene pocas hojas y ramas. Las hojas del tallo son alternas y las superiores están rodeadas de espinas amarillas. Los tallos están coronados por flores de color púrpura o blanco. Los frutos son unos aquenios marrones y moteados. Florece de julio a septiembre.

RECOLECCIÓN – Los frutos a medida que maduran.

DROGA – Frutos secos.

PRINCIPIOS ACTIVOS  – Silimarina, flavonoides, ácido linoléico, oléico y palmítico y tocoferol.

PROPIEDADES – Acción hepato-desintoxicante, regenerador de la célula hepática, colerética y colagoga, tónico cardiaco y algo hipotensor. Digestiva, venotónica, diurética y antipirética.

USOS  y  APLICACIONES –  Insuficiencia  hepatobiliar,  hepatitis  agudas  y  crónicas, cirrosis, inapetencia, dispepsias, hemorragias, gripe, catarros y cistitis.

BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION - Robust plant. It measures between 60 and 150 cm in height. It has a thick and branched root, which gives rise to a rosette of oval leaves, surrounded by irregular teeth. During the second year a straight stem develops, which at the top has few leaves and branches. The leaves of the stem are alternate and the upper ones are surrounded by yellow spines. The stems are crowned by purple or white flowers. The fruits are brown and speckled achenes. It blooms from July to September.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLES - Silymarin, flavonoids, linoleic, oleic and palmitic acid and tocopherol.

PROPERTIES - Hepato-detoxifying action, hepatic cell regenerator, choleretic and collagenous, cardiac tonic and hypotensive. Digestive, venotonic, diuretic and antipyretic.

USES and APPLICATIONS - Hepatobiliary insufficiency, acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, inappetence, dyspepsia, haemorrhages, influenza, colds and cystitis.
